Hannah Brown Complex systems are a delicate balance between stability and fragility; each element rests precisely on the next and plays a vital role in the whole structure. My paintings explore this tension through the formal qualities of colour and composition, and are an attempt to create ambiguous spaces, never fully resolved, which confuse the viewer. The line becomes an element which simultaneously defines space and becomes the space itself. The line holds elements together, suspends sections of the painting in mid-air, and delineates shapes into definite regions. I am interested in that point where the line changes from being one thing to becoming another; the place where the line's role as a boundary ends and it instead becomes a screen, a slice or a whole section of the painting. I hope, overall, to achieve a sense of simplicity and elegance in my paintings, but with a level of detail that only becomes apparent the closer the viewer looks.
